Mar 2017 - Beng Kee Restaurant

Many people know of the famous Mei Keng Fatt Seafood Restaurant on Jl. Awan. Unfortunately many people miss another KL treasure - Restoran Beng Kee, just opposite.

Established in 1986, the restaurant was originally located next to the famous Suzi's Corner, Ampang. Those who frequented the place fondly referred to it as the “Snake Pit”. The local government appropriated part of their land and so they moved down the road to their current location.

Eight Enakkers and two guests were treated to a wonderful feast by owner/chef Mandy Chan, and her son, restaurant manager, Dash. We started off with Chicken in Thai Sauce and then Home Made Butterfish Fillet, followed by Salted Egg Baked Prawns. Each course was delicious.  Beng Kee's seafood comes directly off the boats from Pekan and Kuantan, Pahang, and then the trucks come immediately to the restaurant in KL. Still not daunted by the tasty dishes to come we managed to eat their entire signature Sweet and Sour Pork, Claypot Vegetarian Beancurd and their Four In One Vegetables. By this time we were groaning a bit but we managed to finish some Beng Kee famous Chilli Crab - and Mandy even brought out some lovely sweet buns (a cross between a sweet roll and a Brioche) to mop up the chilli sauce, a perfect finish to the meal.

Mandy and her two other chefs manage to serve more than 40 tables on a weekend evening. We were lucky enough to have the air-conditioned area to ourselves for most of our lunchtime visit. We were fortunate to have some lovely conversation with our hosts as well and their pride in their establishment is very evident.

Our cost for the wonderful spread was RM40/per person for a table of 10. No corkage for your own wine.
