There Are Rivers in the Sky – Elif Shafak

Elif Shafak’s There Are Rivers in the Sky is a beautifully written and meticulously researched historical epic that spans centuries, cultures and continents while following the journey of a single drop of water through time. Shafak masterfully ties together three distinct characters connected by the rivers Tigris and Thames, using water as both a literal and symbolic thread throughout the novel.

The story serves as a thoughtful ode to the ancient city of Nineveh and modern-day Mosul, weaving together historical events and contemporary issues with remarkable skill. Through richly developed characters, the novel explores themes of shame, guilt, childhood and generational trauma, depression, identity and belonging. These deeply human experiences are set against a backdrop of social inequality, poverty and injustice, contrasted with the lives of the wealthy and powerful.

The author also tackles significant contemporary issues including climate change, water scarcity, the displacement of Indigenous peoples and the complex debates surrounding the preservation, ownership and repatriation of cultural artefacts. Many readers were particularly captivated by the historical elements of the novel, including the Assyrian civilisation, The Epic of Gilgamesh, cuneiform translation and the significance of Lamassu sculptures.

Narin’s story and the persecution of the Yazidi people proved especially moving, prompting heartfelt discussion among the group. The novel’s vivid portrayal of historical and modern atrocities left a lasting emotional impact.

The lyrical writing style led many members to highlight memorable passages, while the fascinating historical context sent several of us down unexpected research rabbit holes. The seamless way Shafak bridges different centuries, characters and narratives through the enduring legacy of The Epic of Gilgamesh is a remarkable achievement.
