November 2025 - Batik Paintings – A Beautiful Cultural Heritage

Members enjoyed a memorable art appreciation lecture by Dr. Maithreyi Subramaniam at the iconic Warong Old China. The session highlighted the importance of preserving Malaysia’s culture and heritage, not only to maintain artistic continuity but also to educate future generations. Malaysian batik, rooted in East Coast sarong traditions and influenced by Javanese techniques, represents far more than a decorative craft. It is a true art form and is 100% handmade.

Batik Painting emerged in the 1960s as a modern Malaysian art with a blended influence expressing Nation-building and Malaysian cultural elements. Batik paintings reveal unity, diversity, traditions and national pride. Many local artists studied abroad.

The presentation featured works by three artists: Chuah Thean Teng,  Kwan Chin and Lim Anuar; each with unique narratives, techniques and artistic focuses.

We learnt about the visual qualities, colours, subject matter, textures, crackle effect, narratives and interpretations. Crackle effect adds depth and texture as colour seeps through waxed areas creating a contrast with the figures and background.

Several members stayed for a delicious lunch. A perfect end to an inspiring day.
