January 2025 - The Lion Women of Tehran

This month’s book club discussion focused on The Lion Women of Tehran, a moving and thought-provoking novel that left a strong impression on our group. The story prompted rich discussion around the lives of Iranian women, the depth of female friendships, and the courage shown through quiet resistance and life-altering choices made across generations.

The Lion Women of Tehran follows the intertwined lives of Ellie and Homa, childhood friends whose bond is shaped and ultimately tested by family pressures, social class, betrayal, and the political upheaval of Iran. We are told their story in a clear and accessible style, yet within the simplicity lies complex themes such as jealousy, loyalty, motherhood, and resilience. The passage of time in the novel highlights how early experiences and decisions can profoundly influence the course of one’s life.

Our discussion centered on the idea of “lion women,” one that represents strength, bravery, and moral courage. Rather than portraying heroism in loud or dramatic ways, we are shown how endurance, integrity, and remaining true to one’s convictions can be acts of great bravery. Many members felt this theme was especially poignant given the current situation in Iran, where women continue to stand at the forefront of movements demanding dignity, freedom, and justice.

The group was particularly struck by how the novel humanises political and historical events. Through personal relationships, emotional loss, and moments of joy and heartbreak, the realities of life in Iran feel immediate and deeply personal rather than distant or abstract. This story broadened our groups understanding of Iran’s social history and the vital role women play in shaping political and cultural change.

In conclusion, The Lion Women of Tehran proved to be a compelling and emotionally engaging read for the group. Its focus on friendship, resilience, and womanhood resonated strongly, encouraging thoughtful reflection and open discussion. Members valued the novel for its heartfelt storytelling and its ability to communicate powerful ideas through intimate, character-driven narratives.
