Terrence Perera graciously hosted this outing for us to observe behind-the-scenes action at the oldest polo club in the country. Established in 1902, the KLPC also manages the Riding For the Disabled Association Malaysia (RDA). Explorers observed how this noble endeavour operates, which is entirely run by volunteers within the vicinity of the KLPC. Terrence is also a volunteer at the KLPC.
Members gathered at the Club House overlooking the polo field for a brief introduction before beginning the morning programme. The weather was clear, offering a pleasant view of the grounds while riders trained on the field. The visit began with a short tour led by Mr Hakim, who introduced the group to basic polo equipment and training, including the use of a wooden practice horse.
He also explained several introductory points about the game, such as the size of the polo field and the timing of chukkers (periods of play).
The group was then welcomed by Mr Muthu, representing Riding for the Disabled Association Malaysia (RDA Malaysia). Chairs were arranged near the RDA training area, where he gave a short briefing on the organisation’s background and mission.
RDA Malaysia was founded in 1989 as a non-profit programme inspired by similar initiatives abroad, and has since expanded to multiple branches across Malaysia. The programme offers therapeutic riding sessions for children with a range of learning and developmental disabilities, with classes conducted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The activities require cooperation and support from instructors, parents, physiotherapists and volunteers.
During the visit, members were shown the preparation and cool-down areas for the horses, as well as where bathing and post-training care take place. The group also had the opportunity to observe how RDA sessions are conducted. Some members later tried assisted riding as part of the experience.
The visit offered a meaningful insight into how therapeutic riding benefits children and how the public can play a role in supporting the programme.
Riding for the Disabled Association Malaysia welcomes contributions to help sustain its riding therapy programme. Everyone is also welcome to explore volunteer opportunities, as the organisation continues to rely on trained helpers and community support.
