September 2025 - IAMM - More than a day as a tiger
On September 24th, the Malaysia Culture Group was guided by Senior Curator Zulkifli Ishak through the Islamic Art Museum’s latest exhibition, More than a Day as a Tiger, showing until 11th January 2025.
Curator Zulkifli recalled how in 2005, the Islamic Art Museum of Malaysia (IAMM) acquired a beautiful flintlock gun with an intriguing tiger decoration that had belonged to the last Sultan of Mysore, Tipu Sultan, a fabled figure who fought against the armies of the British East India Company.
Also known as the Tiger of Mysore, Tipu Sultan had gained fame for his pioneering of advanced arms technology and his fierce fighting style. The IAMM decided to acquire key artworks and artefacts linked to Tipu Sultan in private auctions and to research his legacy. The exhibition ‘More than a Day as a Tiger’, with an interesting and richly documented catalogue, is the culmination of this work.
The curator explained the background to the artworks, the innovative technology and artistry of the displayed arms and the fascinating letters acquired by the museum.
