October’s Enak was a celebration of Deepavali, as well as an opportunity to enjoy Indian vegetarian fare in Kuala Lumpur. Kailash Prabat’s first restaurant in Malaysia is honouring the founding family’s three-generation-old culinary heritage that reaches back to the 1940s.

The Mulchandan family started serving their famous chat in Karachi, later expanding to Mumbai and now has many branches in the world, including its first in Malaysia in the NU Sentral Mall in Brickfields.

Hosted by Jayanthi Sinnathamby, Christina Gerstgrasser and Monica Kochar, the ladies looked resplendent in outfits that celebrated the beauty and colours of Deepavali. Jayanthi also gave a lovely speech that introduced Kailash Parbat and their long history, the joys of vegetarian food which is pure and nourishing for the body and soul, and also explained the significance of Deepavali to the attendees. Deepavali celebrates the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.

Attending were 38 Enak members and 2 guests, who each paid RM45 per person, thoroughly enjoyed the food.

The lunch started with a choice of appetizers – a choice of Pani Puri (small hollow fried wheat balls with mashed potatoes and diluted chutney) or Dahi Wala (fried lentil balls in yoghurt).

There were four choice of mains: Dal Makhani (black grams and kidney beans simmered overnight and enriched with butter and cream), Malai Kofta (fried balls of potato and paneer in rich creamy, mild gravy), Diwani Handi (diced mixed vegetables served in creamy spinach gravy) or Pinde Chole Masala (chick peas cooked with a blend of spices). All were thoroughly delicious – having been taste tested by the hosts before the event! The lunch ended on a sweet note with Ras Malai, a soft dumpling of curdled milk, which became a doughy dumpling soaked in a milk syrup.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable event, made even more festive with all the guests either in traditional attire to celebrate Deepavali or in colourful outfits to celebrate the occasion. Special thanks also go to all the people who helped make the event successful. Ambareen, Aileen Alfred, Datin Niki and Terrence Perera for helping with the guests, Christina Gerstgrasser, Joni Kerr, Maria Danilina and Sumitra Sundram for taking the photos, and Kyoko Hidaka and Carin Andersson for managing the collection, making it as usual, another great Enak event.
