I’m a recent entrant to the MCG world, and my very first MCG Enak culinary experience was nothing short of unforgettable. Our destination was the charming little café, Miss Ellie Tea House—a place that feels like a hidden gem straight out of a storybook.
From the moment we stepped inside, it felt as though we were walking into a cozy, quaint European home. We were warmly welcomed by the delightful family behind the café—Chef Justin Wong, his wife Hsin, and his lovely mother Nancy Wong. It’s the kind of place where one visit is enough to feel like part of the family.
Our afternoon began with Chef Justin sharing the heartwarming origin of the café, including the adorable story behind its namesake—Miss Ellie, their beloved pooch. With 29 of us in attendance, managing orders was no small feat, but the team handled it with warmth and grace.
We were treated to a refreshing homemade lemonade to cool us down, followed by a comforting roasted pumpkin soup delicately garnished with walnuts. Fresh, warm, homemade buns with butter completed the first course and won everyone over instantly.
The mains, specially curated by Chef Justin for our gathering, were both hearty and elegant. We had the option of having one of the following main courses, Brown Butter Mushroom Risotto (vegetarian) with a crisp home salad or Grilled Seabass Velouté served with seasonal vegetables or the Chicken Tikka Cottage Pie, accompanied by a delicate side salad, all beautifully presented on classic English crockery.
Adding to the charm of the afternoon, our hosts Cilla Takahashi, Kyoko Hidaka, and Annetta Gerrard, gave us a delightful talk on the history of tea drinking in Britain—complete with fascinating trivia, like how the first tea plant in India was smuggled from China to Darjeeling!
Each of us was invited to bring along our favorite tea quote. Mine was a last-minute scribble, but to my surprise, it won the draw! The gifts—elegant table napkins and beautifully packaged tea bags for everyone—were a thoughtful touch.
The grand finale? A sublime dessert of warm, freshly baked scones with cream and homemade strawberry-thyme jam, served with your choice of tea or coffee. It was the perfect conclusion to a truly magical afternoon.
A heartfelt thank you to our gracious hosts—Cilla Takahashi, Kyoko Hidaka, and Annetta Gerrard—for introducing us to this enchanting haven tucked away in the quieter corners of Taman Melawati.
