Visiting the Indonesian restaurant Pondok Nasi Bakar with the Malaysian Culture Group, Enakers, was a delightful experience, enjoyed by around 31 of us. The event was hosted by Angela and Ay Ling, who curated a warm and engaging afternoon for everyone. The restaurant, founded by Daniella and her partner about a year ago, after their successful venture in Australia, specializes in two main dishes: the fragrant nasi bakar and their gurame flying fish.

Dianella introduced us to the restaurant’s specialties, emphasizing the fragrant nasi bakar—steamed rice wrapped in banana leaves and seasoned with aromatic spices. As we settled in, our meal began with an appetizer of fried tempe and tofu, which we enjoyed with spicy sambal. The crispy textures and flavors were a perfect start to the meal. We then had the opportunity to try various set menus featuring nasi bakar paired with either ayam penyet or grilled chicken. The nasi bakar, with its fragrant rice and layers of spices, was an absolute highlight, offering a delicious balance of savory and aromatic flavors.

To end the meal on a sweet note, we were offered a selection of traditional Indonesian desserts. Many of us enjoyed ice cendol, a refreshing dessert made with pandan-flavored green rice flour jelly, coconut milk, and palm sugar syrup. Others opted for the ice teles, a fruit cocktail featuring avocado, coconut meat, grass jelly, and jackfruit, served in sweetened condensed milk, or the mix fruit bowl.

Adding to the fun, Angela had prepared a series of lucky draws, where winners guessed answers correctly and walked away with beautiful Indonesian pouches.

We left with full hearts and stomachs, thanking Angela and Ay Ling for organizing such a wonderful and memorable lunch.
