2016 MCG Open House

Wed. Sept. 7, 2016 started out with a bang alright…lightning and thunder in the early morning hours announced the beginning of a very special day, and in true KL style it certainly was.  Neither rain, nor a disabled LRT, or the worst traffic jam in months kept 93 people from attending Malaysian Culture Group Open House 2016.  Even some of the event organizers were stranded for several hours hoping to arrive on time!

If you are new to Kuala Lumpur (KL) and you persevered, then kudos to you!  You may have just witnessed KL traffic at its worst, so now you can relax and enjoy your stay here, the hard part is over.  Despite the morning obstacles we are pleased to report that “guests” outnumbered members attending this year, proving you are an enthusiastic bunch.  We look forward to welcoming you and getting to know all 41 of our New Members!

We were so sad this past winter and spring when many members and their families left KL due to the decline in the oil & gas sectors, but now we are thrilled to welcome New Members who can enjoy what MCG has to offer.  We hope that MCG activities will make your stay in Kuala Lumpur more enjoyable, and that you will meet interesting people and make new friends.  Your participation and ideas is our strength.  We are so lucky to have such a diverse membership from all over the world and all walks of life.

We were so pleased to see guests having a good time and chatting with our members that volunteered at the “Market Stalls” explaining our special interest groups: Explorers, Events Planning Team, Book Groups and ENAK!  If you signed up for one (or more) of these groups the convenors will be in touch with you shortly.  Get ready for some interesting adventures!

Our appeal for a librarian (or two, or three) has also been answered. Be on the lookout in the weeks to come to see how we creatively keep the library accessible to you during the monthly lectures.  Thank you to new and current members for stepping up to the bookplate!

As the Open House drew to a close we held a new members gift draw. Congratulations to Poupak Faizi for winning the coffee table book A Malaysian Tapestry, a book about the Rich Heritage at the National Museum.  The book is a project of the Museum Volunteers (many of whom are MCG members) and has a wealth of information.

In true Malaysian style, the Open House ended with lunch. We hope you enjoyed the selection Perfect Match Catering created for us and that you went home much more relaxed than when you arrived.  Thank you for coming to the Open House. It was a pleasure having you join us! We look forward to seeing you at the next lecture on Wed. Sept. 28th about The Alluring Cheongsam.

For those of you that missed the Open House please join us for coffee at one of our monthly lectures. Check out our web site for details. Until then, carry an umbrella and stay cool!
