Eleven MCG Enak! members attended the August 8 lunch gathering at Lubuk Bangku for a taste of Negri Sembilan food. My co-host, Lay Chin and I were glad that it was a first-time experience for the ladies, not only for its location in a leafy, older part of Bangsar but also for its food known specially to lunch crowds as Negri Sembilan cuisine. |

Besides tempeh balado, terung balado, telur dadar, daging salai masak kicap, we ordered daging salai, a favourite and typical beef dish from the State of Negri Sembilan and the Kampung Ayam gulai. A couple of dishes were described as spicy and chili hot of which Negri dishes can rightfully lay claim! For the vegetarians, there were dishes to enjoy with the menu changing daily for them. Dessert was kueh koci, sago in gula Melaka and santan served chilled in a cup, oranges and a selection of local fruits like star fruit and apple. | ||

Note on Negri Sembilan: Negri Sembilan literally means 9 states or districts. It is the Minangkabaus who hold the key to the history of Negri Sembilan. They were immigrants from West Sumatra who settled there between the 15th and 16th Century at the height of the Malaccan Consulate. Geographically, Negri Sembilan lies next to the state of Selangor.
